Windows 11 Tests Taskbar Companions: A Potential New AI Feature on the Horizon

Microsoft is currently exploring a new feature for the Windows 11 taskbar known as "companions," which may integrate AI functionalities. Previous reports indicated that Microsoft was investigating the addition of AI actions to the taskbar, and recent findings from references discovered by tech enthusiast Xeno seem to confirm this upcoming feature.

Notably, insights shared by Windows expert Phantom highlighted that initial references to this companions feature were located in Windows Server Build 26454. Additionally, preview builds of Windows 11 contain strings pertaining to "Agentic Companions," suggesting a focus on advanced AI capabilities for the taskbar. A recent string within an Insider build mentions "Controls visibility of agentic companions on the taskbar," which could link to the envisioned functionalities.

Although specifics regarding how these AI companions will operate remain speculative, they may share similarities with a previously planned feature aimed at offering "recommendations" for apps or web content right on the taskbar. This recommendations feature was abandoned after the departure of Mikhail Parakhin, who had been overseeing the Copilot and Bing projects.

The development of the recommendations feature was relatively advanced, as it appeared in early preview builds with options for visibility control on the taskbar. Despite its potential to provide contextual suggestions, the project was ultimately put on hold.

In addition to AI-related updates, Microsoft is testing several taskbar enhancements for Windows 11. One such feature is "shared audio," allowing users to connect multiple audio devices simultaneously, enhancing the multimedia experience across Bluetooth devices. Another noteworthy change includes the introduction of a seconds display in the clock on the taskbar’s calendar flyout, a feature currently in testing for Insiders.
