Windows 11 Introduces “Advanced Settings” for Enhanced File Explorer Control and Functionality

Microsoft is making changes to Windows 11 by testing a new "Advanced Settings" feature, aimed at replacing the current ‘For Developers’ page. This new page will provide users with more control over features, including the ability to enable a "long path" functionality in File Explorer.

Currently, the ‘For Developers’ page suggests it is tailored for developers only, but many features it offers are useful for regular users as well. The new Advanced Settings is expected to introduce an option to remove the restrictive 260-character limit on file and folder paths, which causes errors when attempting to transfer files or folders longer than this limit.

The "long path" feature will allow users to surpass the previous limitations set by Windows when managing file and directory functions, which has previously made it cumbersome for users with extensive folder structures.

In addition to the long path feature, the Advanced Settings page is expected to include controls for managing ‘Virtual Workspaces’. This feature facilitates the creation of isolated environments on the PC, making it simpler to run applications safely in virtual machines or containers.

Although the Advanced Settings feature is currently limited to Windows Server builds, it is anticipated to roll out to all Windows 11 users in the upcoming months as part of the Windows 11 24H2 update.
