Windows Update: Navigating New Challenges While Resolving Legacy Issues

The Windows updates from Microsoft released during the August Patchday have been accompanied by some unforeseen issues across various Windows versions. Microsoft is actively working on solutions, including correcting issues from previous updates.

Good News

One positive update is that Microsoft managed to resolve a problem related to the Windows 11 24H2 updates failing when distributed via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). According to a note on the Windows Release Health page, administrators experiencing issues should refresh and re-sync with WSUS to alleviate the problems.

Issues with Reset and Restore

However, a significant drawback emerged: users attempting to reset or restore devices after installing the August updates encounter failures. The affected functions include "System" — "Restore" — "Reset this PC" and "Fix problems using Windows Update." This issue is seen in several versions, including Windows 11 23H2 and 22H2, as well as Windows 10 22H2 and various enterprise editions. To address this, Microsoft is working on an out-of-band update, but has not provided a timeline for its release.

Upgrade Failures

Additionally, Microsoft acknowledged that the August patches might cause upgrade failures with the error code 0x8007007F. This problem arises when initiating updates using "Windows Setup" — "Upgrade" for specific paths. Affected are upgrades from various Windows 10 versions to Windows 11 23H2 and 22H2, and from Windows Server 2016 to 2022. Fortunately, upgrades to more recent versions such as Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 are not impacted. Microsoft claims to have resolved this situation, urging users to retry the installation.
