Windows 11 and 10 Users Discover New Inetpub Folder Following April Update: What You Need to Know

Windows 11 and Windows 10 users have encountered a perplexing new ‘inetpub’ folder after applying Microsoft’s April 2025 updates. As reported by Bleeping Computer, this folder, usually linked to the Internet Information Services (IIS) web server, has appeared on systems that do not have IIS installed. Microsoft has acknowledged this occurrence, confirming it was intentional, yet has not provided a detailed explanation for its presence.

The new ‘inetpub’ folder is empty and can be located in the root of the C: drive. Typically, if IIS were installed, this folder would store logs, website content, and server-related files. The sudden appearance of this folder after updating to Windows 11 KB5055523 or Windows 10 KB5055518 is unusual. It is owned by the SYSTEM account, indicating that an elevated process was responsible for its creation.

Users need not be alarmed by this new addition, as it does not affect system stability or performance. Some have deleted the folder without any adverse effects, but Microsoft has advised against removing it. The folder is deemed harmless; therefore, it is prudent to leave it as is. No new software has been installed on the system with its emergence.

Interestingly, for those interested in using IIS, it can be enabled through the Windows features menu. By pressing the Windows button, typing "Windows features," and checking for Internet Information Services, users can confirm whether it is enabled.

As for the future, it remains to be seen if Microsoft will clarify why this folder was created following the update.
