It’s the second Tuesday of the month, which signifies the arrival of Patch Tuesday once more. Consequently, Microsoft is deploying the monthly security update (also known as the “B release”) for October 2024 on Windows Server 20H2 and on the latest supported versions of Windows 10: 20H2, 21H2, and 22H2.
The latest updates are now being rolled out under KB5044273, which brings the builds to 19044.5011 and 19045.5011. For those looking for standalone download options, the new update is available on the Microsoft Update Catalog here.
The primary focus of this release centers around essential security patches.
Highlights
After a brief hiatus, known issues have made a return:
Identified Problems in This Update
Issue Description
Possible Solution
Upon installation of this security update, there is a possibility of encountering booting issues with Linux if your device is configured for dual-boot with Windows and Linux. This problem may cause your device to be unable to boot into Linux, displaying the error message: “Verifying shim SBAT data failed: Security Policy Violation. An error occurred: SBAT self-check failed: Security Policy Violation.”
In August 2024, Microsoft rolled out a Windows security update that introduced a Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) setting. This setting is designed to prevent the use of outdated and vulnerable boot managers on devices operating Windows. Notably, this SBAT update will not be implemented on devices that are identified as dual-boot systems. However, it has been reported that on certain devices, the dual-boot detection mechanism overlooked some custom dual-boot configurations, resulting in the unintended application of the SBAT setting.
For those encountering this issue, a workaround is available on the Windows release health site.
Moreover, several older versions of Windows 10 have also been updated today. Below is a list of these updates, featuring their corresponding release notes (KB) as well as links to download them from Microsoft’s Update Catalog:
17763.6414
14393.7428
10240.20796
It is important to mention that both Windows 10 20H2 and Windows 10 1909 have officially reached the end of servicing. Furthermore, non-LTSC editions of 21H2 have also concluded their servicing.
