Microsoft Warns: Windows 11 October Update Causes Issues with Keyboards and Mice

After installing the latest update KB5066835 for Windows 11, users have encountered significant issues with USB keyboards and mice failing to function in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). This complication arises particularly when trying to access recovery options, such as repairing or resetting Windows, through recovery mode. Although these devices work fine during normal operation of the operating system, they become non-responsive in recovery mode, making it impossible to navigate the interface.

This bug affects multiple versions of Windows, including Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, as well as Windows Server 2025. The implications are especially troublesome as most modern PCs rely on USB devices, while older PS/2 ports are becoming increasingly rare. Additionally, Bluetooth devices generally do not work in recovery mode, heightening the inconvenience.

Microsoft has acknowledged this issue and is currently investigating its cause. The company plans to release a fix in the near future. The existing recovery updates (KB5067039 and KB5067019) have not resolved the problem.

For users who have already installed KB5066835, it is advisable to avoid entering recovery mode until a patch is released. If you haven’t updated yet, waiting for the fix would also be wise. If your system is operating smoothly, there’s no immediate action needed, but staying informed is prudent should the need for recovery arise.

For those considering moving away from Windows, resources on switching to Linux or Chromebooks are available.
