Microsoft Announces Plans to Deprecate Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)

Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) is now deprecated, with no active development ongoing. Microsoft will no longer add new features to WSUS or actively update it, as the company has ceased making new investments in the WSUS functionality.

Introduced by Microsoft in 2005, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) was designed to help IT administrators manage and deploy updates across various Microsoft products in environments with multiple devices, streamlining the update installation process which cannot be conducted manually. Microsoft has recently declared the deprecation of WSUS to push IT administrators and businesses towards adopting their cloud solutions instead of relying on WSUS.

The existing features of WSUS will continue to function as they do currently, and Microsoft will still deliver updates through WSUS. However, there will be no new improvements or capabilities added, and the system will maintain its current operations. This change particularly impacts enterprises that depend on WSUS for their update processes. Microsoft has also phased out WSUS driver synchronization for its new cloud-based driver services, with the complete deprecation set for April 18, 2025.

Microsoft has mentioned in its blog post that the deprecation of WSUS does not affect the existing capabilities or support for Microsoft Configuration Manager.

Though WSUS is available on Windows Server 2025, Microsoft recommends organizations to start using cloud tools like Windows Autopatch and Microsoft Intune for client update management and Azure Update Manager for server update management. It is up to organizations and their IT policies to decide on using the existing WSUS functionality or cloud-based tools. The cloud-based tools will get regular updates and new functionalities as they have been cited as the replacements for WSUS.
