Microsoft is actively promoting the upgrade to Windows Server 2025 through Windows Update. This follows a brief period of issues with unsolicited upgrades at the time of the new version’s release, which the company has since resolved. With the optional upgrade now reintroduced, IT managers are encouraged to transition their servers to the latest version.
The company announced in the Windows Release Health Notes that Windows Server now supports in-place upgrades from versions 2019 or 2022 to 2025. Microsoft highlights that this process aims to be as simple as regular monthly security updates, eliminating the need for installation media. However, administrators are advised to plan their upgrades carefully.
According to a blog post on "Windows Server News and Best Practices," Microsoft suggests a phased rollout for upgrading, starting with the least critical servers. It is recommended that IT professionals first conduct tests in a controlled environment to familiarize themselves with the upgrade procedure. The duration of the upgrade process will vary based on factors like machine specifications, the number of active applications, and user profiles. Generally, the complete backup and upgrade process should take approximately two hours.
To assist in the transition, Microsoft has laid out a comprehensive ten-step guide for planning the upgrade. This includes seven preparatory steps for businesses running "Desktop Experience" and nine for those using Server Core. Additional practical tips encompass checking error logs, utilizing diagnostic tools, and contacting Microsoft customer support if challenges arise post-upgrade.
