KB5063878: Microsoft Acknowledges UAC Changes Impacting App Installations on Windows 10 & 11

Microsoft recently issued an August 2025 security update, KB5063878, which introduces significant changes affecting User Account Control (UAC) during Windows Installer (MSI) repair operations. The update mandates the need for administrator credentials, addressing a security vulnerability recognized as CVE-2025-50173.

As a result of this enforcement, standard users may face UAC prompts in various situations, such as executing MSI repair commands, launching certain Autodesk applications (like AutoCAD and Civil 3D), and installing applications requiring user-specific configuration. Additionally, those attempting to repair Office Professional Plus 2010 may encounter Error 1730 if the process does not prompt the user for admin credentials. Microsoft advises that applications should be run with administrator rights where feasible.

For IT administrators unable to grant administrative privileges to users, a Group Policy option via Known Issue Rollback (KIR) is available to alleviate this issue across supported Windows platforms, including Windows Server 2025 and various Windows 10 and Windows 11 versions. Microsoft recommends against disabling UAC or any related security features as a workaround.

The company has confirmed it’s in development of a long-term fix. Future updates are anticipated to permit specific applications to perform MSI repairs without triggering UAC prompts, thus balancing usability and security effectively.

In addition to UAC-related changes, the KB5063878 update has drawn criticism from users experiencing SSD failures and streaming difficulties. Microsoft has clarified that these hardware problems are not linked to this August update, with SSD manufacturer Phison echoing that they could not replicate any SSD failure issues associated with the update.
