Microsoft is set to introduce the first hotpatch update for Windows 11 24H2 soon, specifically with its upcoming Patch Tuesday. This new feature will enable the application of security updates without necessitating a system reboot, thus minimizing disruptions for users.
What’s Hotpatching?
Hotpatching allows in-memory code of ongoing processes to be updated directly, eliminating the need for restarts. It’s a method Microsoft has implemented for Windows Server and is now making available for Windows 11 Enterprise clients as well. The update schedule will follow a quarterly rhythm: starting each quarter with a significant cumulative update that requires a reboot, followed by two monthly hotpatch updates that apply without restarts.
Requirements for Hotpatching
To utilize hotpatching, organizations must have devices running Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2 (Build 26100.2033 or later). Management will be done through Microsoft Intune, and devices must be licensed under Windows Enterprise E3/E5 or Windows 365 Enterprise. A new policy in Microsoft Intune dedicated to Windows quality updates will facilitate the deployment of these hotpatch updates.
