Les Cheneaux Community schools is seeking $7.8 million for safety improvements, classroom upgrades and infrastructure repairs.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The proposal encompasses a variety of projects such as repairing leaking roof areas, replacing heating units in specific rooms and installing new ceiling tiles throughout the school. Plans also include upgrading windows, flooring and classroom furniture in various parts of the school.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Safety enhancements are slated to involve the installation of a new PA system, secure interior doors, and exterior emergency lighting.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
This funding request follows the rejection of a previous $12.6 million proposal last year, which had included plans for a fieldhouse intended as a community space and supplementary gymnasium.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Superintendent Bob Lohff says that request has been dropped following community feedback, reducing the proposal by over $4 million and narrowing the scope to more targeted repairs and replacements.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\u201cI know there\u2019s some voters that are hesitant, you know, because there\u2019s a cost,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I think again, the schools extremely important for the community. If the school wasn\u2019t here, what would we be?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The funding would also go towards the purchase of two new school busses, a generator, and new laptops to ensure each student has access.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The proposal would levy 1.7 mills if approved, or $170 a year for every $100,000 of a home\u2019s taxable value.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
