For example, you forgot to attach a file to a message, specified the wrong recipient, or the information in the email is no longer up-to-date. In all these cases, Outlook allows you to recall a sent e-mail from users\u2019 mailboxes and send a new one with valid details.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>You can recall an e-mail from Outlook if:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You are using the <b>desktop version of Outlook<\/b>. The recall feature is not available in Outlook Web client (OWA, Outlook on the Web);<\/li>\n<li>Both your mailbox and the recipient\u2019s mailboxes are <b>in the same Exchange organization<\/b>;<\/li>\n<li><b>The recipient has not read the email<\/b>. Note: an email is considered read when it has been viewed in the Outlook Preview Panel (<a href=\"https:\/\/woshub.com\/check-read-unread-email-status-exchange\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Getting email read status in Exchange mailbox with PowerShell<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>The email item is in the <b>Inbox<\/b> folder and has not been moved to another folder by <a href=\"https:\/\/woshub.com\/manage-exchange-mailbox-inbox-rules-powershell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Exchange\/Outlook inbox rules<\/a> or manually by the user;<\/li>\n<li>Your mailbox isn\u2019t connected via POP or IMAP;<\/li>\n<li>If you use Exchange Online, make sure the email recall option is enabled at a tenant-wide level;<\/li>\n<li>The user doesn\u2019t have cached or offline mode enabled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><h2>How to Recall a Sent Email in Outlook<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Here\u2019s a step-by-step guide for recalling a sent email in the Outlook desktop client (we used Outlook 2019 in this example but the recall option works the same way in other versions):<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Locate your email in the <strong>Sent<\/strong> folder and open it;<\/li>\n<li>Go to <strong>File<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Info<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Resend or Recall<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Recall this message<\/strong>; The recall option is also available from the Outlook top menu (<strong>Actions<\/strong> -&gt; <strong>Recall This Message<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>You will be asked to select the action you wish to perform. You can either <code>Delete unread copies of these messages<\/code> or <code>Delete unread copies and replicas with a new message<\/code>. The second allows you to edit the original email and replace it in the recipient\u2019s mailbox. To get notified about the email recall status for each mailbox, enable the option <code>Tell me if recall succeeds or fails for each recipient<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>Now click OK to queue a recall request.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><p>After some time, you should get a report on the recall status for each recipient. The report can either indicate<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><p>Message successfully recalled.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Or<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The message was successfully recalled but was read by the recipient.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><p>In Exchange Online, the recall request status is viewable by selecting the <strong>Message Recall Report for message<\/strong> link, expected to be delivered to your mailbox.<\/p>\n<p>Upon successful email recall, it vanishes from the recipient\u2019s Inbox.<\/p>\n<h2>Enable or Disable the Email Message Recall in Exchange Online<\/h2>\n<p>In Exchange Online (Microsoft 365), the email recall feature is enabled or disabled at the tenant level:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Sign in to the Exchange admin center;<\/li>\n<li>Go to <strong>Settings -&gt; Mail flow;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Find the <strong>Allow users to recall messages read by the recipient option;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This option is enabled by default.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><p>You can disable the email recall option for your EOL organization using PowerShell.
