Microsoft has added Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) to Windows Server 2025 in the October 2026 security update. The feature can help resolve critical startup failures, but it is disabled by default and must be enabled by an administrator through Group Policy.<\/p>\n
When a server repeatedly fails to boot, it enters the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). QMR can then connect to Windows Update, look for a repair suited to the problem, and download and install it. The feature was first introduced for Windows 11 and is intended to help IT teams restore systems, especially during widespread outages.<\/p>\n
Cloud-based repairs supplement Windows\u2019 existing local startup repair tools; they do not replace them. QMR can help only if Windows Update has an appropriate fix available.<\/p>\n
To use QMR, a server needs the October update or a later one, a functioning WinRE setup, and network access from the recovery environment. Administrators can configure it under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Quick Machine Recovery<\/strong>, either locally or through domain policy. Microsoft provides Group Policy setup instructions<\/a>.<\/p>\n The policy settings separately control whether Windows Update repairs are allowed and whether the system searches for them automatically. Administrators should review these options before an outage: installing the update alone does not change Server 2025\u2019s recovery behavior.<\/p>\n
